Description

Christmas Cranberry Walnut Cheese Balls are a festive, make-ahead holiday appetizer made with creamy cheeses, sweet cranberries, crunchy walnuts, and fresh herbs. They are easy to prepare, perfect for gatherings, and offer a delightful blend of sweet, savory, and tangy flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 oz cream cheese (softened): Creates the creamy base and binds the ingredients
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese: Adds bold, savory flavor and texture
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries, chopped: Provides sweet, chewy bursts and festive color
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped: Adds crunch and nutty richness
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions: Introduces a mild onion flavor and freshness
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder: Enhances the savory depth without overpowering
  • Salt & black pepper to taste: Balances and elevates the overall flavor
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries (for coating), chopped: Adds sweet and decorative finish
  • 1/4 cup walnuts (for coating), chopped: Provides extra crunch and visual appeal
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped: Brightens the exterior with color and herbaceous flavor

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese and shredded sharp cheddar cheese until smooth.
  2. Add chopped dried cranberries, walnuts, green onions, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until fully incorporated.
  3. Divide the mixture into 2–3 equal portions and roll each into a firm ball.
  4. Wrap each cheese ball in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to firm up.
  5. In a shallow bowl, combine chopped dried cranberries, chopped walnuts, and fresh parsley for the coating.
  6. Unwrap the chilled cheese balls and roll them in the coating mixture, pressing gently to ensure it sticks evenly.
  7. Place on a serving plate and serve with crackers, toasted bread slices, or fresh vegetable sticks.

Notes

  • Soften the cream cheese at room temperature for easier mixing.
  • Chilling is essential for firm texture and easier coating.
  • Prepare up to 2 days in advance and coat just before serving for freshness.
  • Toasting the walnuts before adding enhances their flavor and aroma.
