Description

A savory and indulgent breakfast sandwich that recreates the McDonald’s Steak Egg and Cheese Bagel at home. It features tender shaved steak, scrambled eggs, caramelized onions, and creamy sauce, all served on a toasted bagel for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 plain bagels (or onion, everything, or cheese bagels)
  • 1/2 pound shaved steak
  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 2 slices American cheese (cheddar or provolone also work)
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon Montreal steak seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise (for the sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons mustard (for the sauce)
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried dill (for the sauce)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the breakfast sauce by mixing together mayonnaise, mustard, and dill in a small bowl. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook until onions are browned and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter and cook the shaved steak with Worcestershire sauce and Montreal steak seasoning until browned, about 3-4 minutes. Return the caramelized onions to the skillet and mix with the steak.
  4. Form two piles of the steak and onion mixture, and place a slice of cheese on each pile to melt.
  5. In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of butter and scramble the beaten eggs. Divide them into two portions for the sandwiches.
  6. Toast the bagels in a toaster or skillet until golden brown.
  7. Assemble the sandwiches: spread sauce on each bagel half. Add half of the scrambled eggs on the bottom half of each bagel, then top with steak and onion mixture. Cover with the top half of the bagel.

Notes

  • Caramelizing the onions slowly brings out their natural sweetness, adding great flavor to the sandwich.
  • You can prepare the breakfast sauce ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to 2 days.
  • Feel free to use a different type of cheese, like cheddar or provolone, for a different flavor profile.
  • Adjust the seasoning to taste, and add hot sauce or jalapeños if you like a spicy kick.
