Description
This homemade cranberry relish is the perfect addition to your Thanksgiving table, offering a delicious combination of tart fresh cranberries, sweet sugar, and zesty orange zest, enhanced with the warmth of cinnamon and ginger. It’s easy to make and a healthier alternative to store-bought cranberry sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 12 oz fresh cranberries
- 1 cup granulated sugar (or adjust to taste)
- 1/2 cup cranberry juice
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Orange zest from 1 orange
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, combine the sugar, cranberry juice, grated ginger, and ground cinnamon. Stir to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over medium-high heat, stirring often until the sugar dissolves.
- Rinse and pick through the cranberries to remove any damaged ones. Add the cranberries to the boiling syrup.
- Boil the cranberries for 2–5 minutes, or until the berries start to pop. Be careful not to overcook them.
- Skim off any foam that forms on the surface using a metal spoon.
- Remove the pot from heat and stir in the orange zest.
- Allow the relish to cool to room temperature, uncovered, before transferring it to a container.
- Store the cranberry relish in the fridge for up to 3 months.
Notes
- For a smoother texture, puree the relish after it has cooled or run it through a food mill.
- If you want a spicier version, add minced jalapenos while the mixture is cooking.
- For an adult twist, you can stir in a splash of bourbon or whiskey while the syrup boils.
