Description

These Easy French Dip Sliders are a crowd-pleasing, beginner-friendly take on the classic French dip sandwich. Juicy roast beef, gooey melted cheese, and caramelized onions are layered between soft sweet rolls, baked to perfection, and served with a rich au jus dipping sauce. Whether for game day, a family dinner, or a quick meal, this recipe delivers bold flavor with minimal effort.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (plus ½ cup melted for topping)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, minced
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 sweet rolls
  • 10 slices provolone cheese
  • 14 ounces sliced deli roast beef
  • 1 ½ tablespoons dried onion soup mix
  • 1 packet au jus gravy mix
  • 3 cups water
  • Fresh chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 3 tablespoons of butter. Add the sliced onions and stir to coat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and caramelized, about 12–15 minutes. Stir in the thyme, salt, and pepper, then remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Prepare the rolls: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Keeping the rolls intact, use a large knife to slice them horizontally, separating the tops from the bottoms. Place the bottom half, cut side up, into an 11×7-inch baking dish.
  3. Assemble the sliders: Lay half of the provolone cheese over the rolls. Evenly distribute the sliced roast beef, followed by the caramelized onions. Add the remaining cheese on top, then place the top half of the rolls back on.
  4. Make the butter topping: In a small bowl, combine the melted butter with the dried onion soup mix. Use a brush to evenly coat the tops of the rolls with the mixture, ensuring full coverage for extra flavor.
  5. Bake the sliders: Loosely cover the dish with foil, making sure it does not touch the tops of the rolls. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown.
  6. Prepare the au jus: While the sliders are baking, mix the au jus gravy packet with water according to the package instructions. Heat until warm and serve alongside the sliders for dipping.

Notes

  • Cheese Variations: Try mozzarella, Swiss, or even pepper jack for a different flavor twist.
  • Make-Ahead Option: Assemble the sliders in advance, refrigerate them covered, and bake just before serving.
  • Leftover Storage: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for the best texture.
  • Serving Suggestion: These pair well with fries, coleslaw, or a crisp green salad for a complete meal.
