Description

This easy green bean casserole recipe features a creamy mushroom sauce made with canned soup, tender green beans, and crispy fried onions on top. Perfect for holidays or any family meal, it brings a comforting and classic flavor to the table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 (14.5 oz) cans green beans, drained
  • 2 (10.5 oz) cans cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 cups French fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Spray a 3-quart casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, whole milk, and freshly ground black pepper.
  3. Stir in the drained green beans and ½ cup of crispy fried onions.
  4. Pour the green bean mixture into the prepared casserole dish. Spread it out evenly and top with the remaining fried onions.
  5. Place the casserole in the oven and bake for 20 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbly and the onions are golden brown.
  6. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a cheesy version, add 1 to 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese to the green bean mixture before baking.
  • Fresh green beans can be used instead of canned, with about 5 cups cooked.
  • If you don’t like mushrooms, you can substitute the cream of mushroom soup with cream of celery or cream of onion soup.
  • For a crispier topping, mix some fried onions into the casserole.
  • You can make this dish up to 3 days in advance without the fried onions. Bake it with the fried onions right before serving.
