Description

This rich and creamy French Hot Chocolate, or Chocolat Chaud, is a luxurious Parisian-style drink made with real dark chocolate, milk, and cream. It’s thick, indulgent, and perfect for cozy winter days or elegant gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ounces dark chocolate (60% cacao): provides deep, rich chocolate flavor
  • 1 cup 2% milk: forms the base and smooth texture
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream: adds velvety richness and thickness
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup: lightly sweetens and adds depth
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract: enhances the overall chocolate flavor
  • 1/2 teaspoon instant coffee or espresso powder: intensifies the chocolate taste
  • Whipped cream (optional): for topping and added creaminess
  • Chocolate shavings or mini marshmallows (optional): garnish for texture and flavor

Instructions

  1. Finely chop the dark chocolate and set aside.
  2. In a small saucepan, combine the milk and heavy cream. Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently until the mixture is just bubbling around the edges.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and whisk in the chopped dark chocolate. Stir until fully melted and smooth.
  4. Whisk in the maple syrup, vanilla extract, and instant coffee or espresso powder until well combined.
  5. Remove from heat and pour into small mugs or espresso cups.
  6. Top with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, or mini marshmallows if desired.

Notes

  • Do not let the milk and cream mixture boil; keep it at a gentle simmer.
  • Use high-quality dark chocolate for the best flavor and texture.
  • Whisk from the bottom to prevent chocolate from sticking or burning.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and reheat gently before serving.
  • Great served in small espresso cups due to its rich texture.
