- 2 large sweet onions, sliced
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 24 slider buns
- 12–16 ounces Gruyere cheese, shredded
- 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, divided
- 2 tablespoons beef base (like Better than Bouillon), divided
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, divided
- Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Slice the onions and sauté them in 2 tablespoons of butter over medium-low heat for 25–30 minutes until golden and caramelized, stirring occasionally.
- In a bowl, mix the ground beef with half the beef base and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper, then add to the skillet with onions and cook over medium-high heat until browned. Drain excess grease.
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a large sheet pan. Slice slider buns and place the bottoms tightly on the sheet.
- Evenly distribute the beef and onion mixture over the bottom buns. Top with shredded Gruyere cheese and place top buns over the cheese.
- Melt the remaining butter in a bowl, then stir in the remaining beef base and Worcestershire sauce. Brush over the top buns.
- Sprinkle with sesame seeds, fresh thyme, garlic powder, and onion powder. Bake for 20 minutes until cheese is melted and tops are golden.
- Let cool slightly, then serve warm.

- Use low-sodium beef base and unsalted butter to reduce saltiness.

- Substitute Gruyere with Swiss or provolone for affordability.
