Description

Easy French Onion Sliders made with caramelized onions, savory beef, melted Gruyere, and buttery slider buns—perfect for beginner cooks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large sweet onions, sliced
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 24 slider buns
  • 1216 ounces Gruyere cheese, shredded
  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, divided
  • 2 tablespoons beef base (like Better than Bouillon), divided
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, divided
  • Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Slice the onions and sauté them in 2 tablespoons of butter over medium-low heat for 25–30 minutes until golden and caramelized, stirring occasionally.
  2. In a bowl, mix the ground beef with half the beef base and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper, then add to the skillet with onions and cook over medium-high heat until browned. Drain excess grease.
  3. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a large sheet pan. Slice slider buns and place the bottoms tightly on the sheet.
  4. Evenly distribute the beef and onion mixture over the bottom buns. Top with shredded Gruyere cheese and place top buns over the cheese.
  5. Melt the remaining butter in a bowl, then stir in the remaining beef base and Worcestershire sauce. Brush over the top buns.
  6. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, fresh thyme, garlic powder, and onion powder. Bake for 20 minutes until cheese is melted and tops are golden.
  7. Let cool slightly, then serve warm.

Notes

  • Use low-sodium beef base and unsalted butter to reduce saltiness.
  • Prep the beef and onion mixture ahead and refrigerate for convenience.
  • Substitute Gruyere with Swiss or provolone for affordability.
  • Drain grease well to prevent soggy buns.
  • Toast bottom buns slightly to maintain texture.
