Ingredients
Scale
- 3 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced into 1/4-inch rings
- 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup (50 g) granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 3/4 cup (180 ml) whole milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups (480 ml) vegetable oil, for frying
- 1/2 cup (60 g) powdered sugar, optional for dusting
- 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar mixed with 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, for coating
Instructions
- Peel and core the apples, then slice them into 1/4-inch thick rings. Pat each slice dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the milk, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined to form a smooth batter.
- Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- Dip each apple ring into the batter, allowing excess to drip off, then carefully place into the hot oil. Fry in batches without overcrowding the pan.
- Fry for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried apple rings to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- While still warm, coat in the cinnamon sugar mixture or dust with powdered sugar. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Maintain the oil temperature at 350°F (175°C) to prevent greasy apple rings.
- Use firm apples like Granny Smith for the best texture and slight tartness.
- Do not overcrowd the pan to ensure even frying and crispiness.
- Serve immediately for best flavor and texture.
- Reheat leftovers in an oven or air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3–5 minutes to restore crispiness.
