Description

Halloween Deviled Eggs are spooky party appetizers with dark black crackled egg shells filled with a bright orange filling. These easy-to-make, visually striking treats are perfect for Halloween gatherings, offering a fun and flavorful way to impress your guests.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large eggs (hard-boiled)
  • 8 drops super black food gel
  • 5 cups water
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon creme fraiche (substitute whipped cream cheese or sour cream)
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 10 drops orange food gel or food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon black sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Boil eggs by your preferred method—stovetop, Instant Pot, or steam method.
  2. Mix 5 cups of water with 8 drops of black food gel in a large bowl. Crack the egg shells by gently tapping them with the back of a spoon, then place the eggs in the black water mixture. Let them sit in the fridge for at least two hours.
  3. Peel the eggs and slice them in half. Gently pop the yolks out from the back of the egg.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the yolks, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, salt, pepper, and creme fraiche or sour cream. Mash the mixture until smooth.
  5. Add 10 drops of orange food coloring to the yolk mixture and mix until the color is even.
  6. Transfer the orange yolk mixture to a zip-lock bag fitted with a large star-shaped piping tip.
  7. Pipe the orange mixture into the egg whites.
  8. Sprinkle black sesame seeds on top for garnish. Keep refrigerated until serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute mayonnaise with vegan mayo and cream cheese with dairy-free options for a vegan version.
  • For an added flair, consider adding black olive spiders by cutting black olives in half and placing them on top of the deviled eggs.
  • If you want a spicier kick, swap Dijon mustard for spicy brown mustard.
  • To make these deviled eggs ahead of time, prepare the filling and store it in the piping bag, and crack the eggs and store them in a tray until ready to assemble.
