Description

Hibiscus Orange Jam is a vibrant and flavorful spread made with dried hibiscus flowers, fresh orange peel, and agar agar, offering a perfect balance of floral sweetness and citrusy tang. It’s an easy-to-make jam that will brighten up your breakfast, desserts, and more.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 30 g (about 1 oz or 2/3 cup) dried hibiscus flowers
  • Peel from one orange, finely grated
  • 480 ml (2 cups) water
  • 300 g (1 1/2 cups) blonde sugar (Turbinado or Demerara are also good)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons agar agar powder

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine the dried hibiscus flowers, finely grated orange peel, blonde sugar, and 2 cups of water.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 20 minutes to allow the hibiscus and orange peel to infuse the liquid.
  3. If you prefer a smoother texture, strain the liquid into a bowl, pressing the hibiscus flowers and orange peel to extract all the flavor. Discard the solids. Alternatively, blend the mixture for a jam with bits.
  4. Dilute the agar agar powder in a small amount of cold water and add it to the strained or blended mixture in the saucepan. Stir well.
  5. Continue simmering the mixture for another 5–10 minutes until it thickens to your desired consistency.
  6. Once the jam is ready, remove the saucepan from the heat. Pour the jam into sterilized jars and let it cool before sealing.

Notes

  • Adjust the sugar to your taste preference. If you prefer a sweeter jam, add more sugar.
  • If you prefer a chunkier jam, you can skip the straining step and blend the mixture with the flowers and peel.
  • Ensure you dilute the agar agar in cold water before adding it to the hot mixture for a smoother texture.
  • Store the jam in sterilized jars for longer shelf life.
