Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds beef (cut into bite-sized pieces; stew meat, top round, or beef tip)
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil (or substitute with olive oil or vegetable oil)
- 4 cloves garlic (minced)
- ½ cup honey
- ½ cup ketchup
- ½ cup soy sauce (or substitute with coconut aminos)
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano (or Italian seasoning)
- 1 cup cold filtered water
- 1–2 tablespoons cornstarch (mixed with an equal amount of cold water, for thickening)
- Optional garnishes: sesame seeds, chopped green onions, or parsley
Instructions
- Brown the beef: Heat sesame oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef in batches, ensuring the pieces don’t crowd the pan. Sear on all sides until caramelized but not fully cooked through.
- Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the minced garlic, honey, ketchup, soy sauce, oregano, and water until well combined.
- Combine and simmer: Pour the sauce over the seared beef, stirring to coat each piece evenly. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce will start to thicken and glaze the beef.
- Thicken the sauce (optional): If a thicker sauce is desired, stir in the cornstarch slurry and let it cook for an additional 2–3 minutes until the sauce reaches a glossy, rich consistency.
- Garnish and serve: Remove from heat and sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped green onions before serving. Enjoy with rice, noodles, or roasted vegetables.
Notes
- If using a slow cooker, brown the beef first, then add it to the cooker with the sauce ingredients. Cook on low for 4–6 hours. Stir in cornstarch slurry at the end if needed.
- For an Instant Pot, use the sauté function to brown the beef, add the sauce ingredients, then cook on high pressure for 20 minutes with a 10-minute natural release.
- For a spicy kick, add red pepper flakes or sriracha to the sauce.
- Substitute beef with chicken thighs or cubed pork for a different variation.
- Serve with steamed rice, mashed potatoes, or stir-fried veggies for a complete meal.
