Description

Louisiana Dirty Rice is a hearty and flavorful Southern dish combining ground beef, pork sausage, aromatic vegetables, and a blend of spices. It’s a versatile recipe that can be served as a main dish or as a side for a family-friendly meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4-5 cups cooked rice, prepared with chicken broth
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground pork sausage
  • ¾ cup green bell pepper, diced
  • ¾ cup yellow onion, diced
  • ¼ cup celery, diced
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 1 tablespoon bacon grease or cooking oil
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 2 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat bacon grease or cooking oil over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and sausage to brown.
  2. As meat begins to brown, add diced bell pepper, onion, and celery. Cook until vegetables soften.
  3. Once meat is fully browned, stir in all herbs and spices except for parsley. Mix well.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the meat, ensuring it coats well. Add chicken broth and bay leaves, scraping the bottom of the pan to loosen browned bits. Allow to simmer for 5-8 minutes.
  5. Fold in cooked rice and parsley. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Serve hot.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, swap ground pork sausage for lean turkey sausage.
  • If you prefer more spice, increase the amount of cayenne pepper and chili powder.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • For a vegetarian alternative, replace the meats with plant-based proteins or tofu.
