Description

Moist Spice Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting is a soft, tender cake made with warm spices like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves, finished with a rich and tangy cream cheese frosting. It is a classic comfort dessert perfect for holidays, gatherings, or everyday baking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  5. Alternately add the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the batter, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top evenly.
  7. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
  9. To make the frosting, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth, then gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract until fluffy.
  10. Spread the frosting evenly over the cooled cake, slice, and serve.

Notes

  • Allow all refrigerated ingredients to reach room temperature before mixing for best texture.
  • Do not overmix the batter once the flour is added to keep the cake tender.
  • The cake can be made a day ahead and frosted before serving.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
