Description

This homemade Shamrock Shake is a creamy, mint-flavored milkshake inspired by the classic seasonal favorite. Made with vanilla ice cream, whole milk, and pure mint extract, this quick 5-minute recipe delivers a thick, smooth texture and refreshing flavor perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or anytime you crave a cool minty treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups (1.5 quarts) vanilla ice cream
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 3/4 teaspoon pure mint extract (not peppermint)
  • 1/8 teaspoon green food coloring (about 1015 drops liquid)
  • 1 cup whipped cream (for topping)
  • 1 tablespoon green sanding sugar (optional, for garnish)
  • 6 maraschino cherries (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Add the 6 cups vanilla ice cream to a large high-powered blender.
  2. Pour in 1 1/2 cups whole milk to help blend the shake to a smooth consistency.
  3. Add 3/4 teaspoon pure mint extract, ensuring it is mint and not peppermint for the classic Shamrock Shake flavor.
  4. Add 1/8 teaspoon green food coloring and adjust slightly if a deeper green color is desired.
  5. Blend on high speed until completely smooth and creamy, about 30–60 seconds. Avoid overblending to maintain thickness.
  6. Pour the Shamrock Shake evenly into chilled serving glasses.
  7. Top each serving with whipped cream, a sprinkle of green sanding sugar if desired, and a maraschino cherry. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a thicker Shamrock Shake, reduce the milk slightly or add an extra scoop of ice cream.
  • For a thinner consistency, add milk one tablespoon at a time and blend briefly.
  • Use regular vanilla ice cream instead of vanilla bean for a more authentic fast-food style flavor.
  • Do not substitute peppermint extract unless you prefer a stronger candy-like mint taste.
  • Chill serving glasses in the freezer for 10 minutes before pouring to keep the shake cold longer.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 1 month and re-blend before serving.
