Ingredients
Scale
- 6 cups of bread cubes (day-old bread preferred)
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 1 tablespoon dried sage
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 2 cups chicken broth
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- Cut the day-old bread into small cubes and set aside in a large mixing bowl.
- In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions and celery, sautéing for 5 minutes or until softened.
- Stir in the sage, salt, and pepper, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes.
- Pour the sautéed vegetable mixture over the bread cubes and mix well.
- Gradually add the chicken broth, stirring until the bread cubes are fully moistened.
- Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and press down gently to ensure even coverage.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden and crispy.
- Remove from the oven and let the dressing cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- If you prefer a crispier dressing, broil for 2-3 minutes at the end of baking.
- Make-ahead tip: You can prepare the dressing the night before and store it in the refrigerator. Reheat before serving.
- For a vegetarian option, swap the chicken broth with vegetable broth.
- Feel free to add nuts or dried fruit for extra flavor and texture.
