Description
This Slow Cooker Apple Butter recipe combines the sweetness of apples with cozy spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. It’s an easy-to-make spread that can be enjoyed on toast, pancakes, or even as a gift for friends and family. Made in a slow cooker, it’s simple to prepare and the result is a smooth, spiced butter perfect for any time of year.
Ingredients
Scale
- 5 lbs. apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 2 dashes salt
Instructions
- Peel, core, and slice your apples into chunks. Add the apples to the slow cooker.
- Sprinkle in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Stir everything together until the apples are well-coated with the spices and sugar.
- Cover and cook on HIGH for 5 hours or LOW for 8-10 hours until the apples are soft and begin to break down.
- Once the apples are cooked, transfer everything (including the juices) into a blender. Cover with a towel and lid to prevent splattering, and blend until smooth.
- If the apple butter is too runny, return it to the slow cooker, set it to HIGH, and cook uncovered for 45-60 minutes until it thickens to your desired consistency.
Notes
- If you don’t have cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves, apple pie spice can be used. Substitute with 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon of apple pie spice.
- If the apple butter is too runny, let it cook uncovered in the slow cooker to thicken.
- Use a towel to secure the blender lid to prevent burns while blending hot liquids.
- Store in airtight containers in the fridge for up to a week, or freeze for up to a year in straight-sided mason jars.
