Description

This Slow Cooker Apple Butter recipe combines the sweetness of apples with cozy spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. It’s an easy-to-make spread that can be enjoyed on toast, pancakes, or even as a gift for friends and family. Made in a slow cooker, it’s simple to prepare and the result is a smooth, spiced butter perfect for any time of year.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 lbs. apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 2 dashes salt

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and slice your apples into chunks. Add the apples to the slow cooker.
  2. Sprinkle in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Stir everything together until the apples are well-coated with the spices and sugar.
  3. Cover and cook on HIGH for 5 hours or LOW for 8-10 hours until the apples are soft and begin to break down.
  4. Once the apples are cooked, transfer everything (including the juices) into a blender. Cover with a towel and lid to prevent splattering, and blend until smooth.
  5. If the apple butter is too runny, return it to the slow cooker, set it to HIGH, and cook uncovered for 45-60 minutes until it thickens to your desired consistency.

Notes

  • If you don’t have cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves, apple pie spice can be used. Substitute with 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon of apple pie spice.
  • If the apple butter is too runny, let it cook uncovered in the slow cooker to thicken.
  • Use a towel to secure the blender lid to prevent burns while blending hot liquids.
  • Store in airtight containers in the fridge for up to a week, or freeze for up to a year in straight-sided mason jars.
