Description

This Stove Top Mac and Cheese is a quick and creamy comfort food made with tender elbow macaroni and a rich homemade cheese sauce. Ready in about 25 minutes, this stovetop macaroni and cheese combines cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan for a smooth, cheesy pasta dish perfect for weeknight dinners or cozy family meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz elbow macaroni
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the 8 oz elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 1/4 cup butter until fully melted.
  3. Whisk in 1/4 cup all-purpose flour and cook for about 1 minute until the mixture becomes lightly golden and smooth.
  4. Slowly pour in 2 cups milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Continue whisking and cook for about 4–5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and add 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, and 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese.
  6. Stir continuously until the cheeses fully melt and the sauce becomes smooth and creamy.
  7. Season the sauce with 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 1/4 teaspoon paprika, and 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder. Mix well.
  8. Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until all the pasta is evenly coated.
  9. Cook for another 1 minute on low heat, then serve immediately while hot and creamy.

Notes

  • Always shred cheese from a block for smoother melting and a creamier sauce.
  • If the cheese sauce becomes too thick, stir in a small splash of warm milk to loosen it.
  • Keep the heat low when adding cheese to prevent the sauce from becoming grainy.
  • Add cooked bacon, ham, or roasted vegetables to make the dish more filling.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
