Description

Tennessee Onions are a cheesy, savory Southern side dish made with sweet Vidalia onions, butter, and three types of cheese, topped with breadcrumbs for added crunch. This dish offers a comforting, flavorful combination of creamy, melted cheese and caramelized onions that are perfect for any meal or gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large Sweet Vidalia Onions, sliced into rings
  • 2 tablespoons Butter, melted
  • 1 cup Cheddar Cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese, grated
  • 1/2 cup Mozzarella Cheese, shredded
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Thyme, dried or fresh
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Peel and slice the Vidalia onions into thick rings. Arrange the onion rings in a single layer in the baking dish.
  3. In a small bowl, combine thyme, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Sprinkle this seasoning mix evenly over the onions.
  4. Top the onions with shredded cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheeses, covering the onions completely.
  5. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the cheese layer for a crispy topping.
  6. Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the breadcrumbs to ensure a golden finish.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the breadcrumbs are golden brown.
  8. Let the dish cool slightly before serving. Enjoy as a side dish or as a topping for burgers or roasted meats.

Notes

  • If Vidalia onions are not available, yellow onions can be used, though they will be less sweet.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute the breadcrumbs with gluten-free breadcrumbs or crushed gluten-free crackers.
  • Make ahead by assembling the dish and storing it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Bake when ready to serve.
  • If you prefer a crunchier topping, increase the amount of breadcrumbs or use panko breadcrumbs for added texture.
