Ingredients
Scale
- 8 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 14 cups mini marshmallows
- 10 cups Rice Krispies cereal
- 1/4 teaspoon red gel food coloring
- 1/4 teaspoon blue gel food coloring
- 16 ounces white frosting
- 1/2 cup patriotic sprinkles
- 1 tablespoon non-stick cooking spray
Instructions
- Spray two 9×13-inch baking pans with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.
- Divide the butter and mini marshmallows evenly between two large microwave-safe bowls.
- Microwave the first bowl on high for 1 1/2 minutes, stirring every 20 seconds until smooth and fully melted. Repeat with the second bowl.
- Add red gel food coloring to one bowl and blue gel food coloring to the other. Stir each mixture until the colors are fully blended.
- Divide the Rice Krispies cereal evenly between both bowls and gently fold until fully coated with the marshmallow mixture.
- Transfer the red mixture into one prepared pan and the blue mixture into the second pan. Press gently into even layers without compacting too firmly.
- Sprinkle patriotic sprinkles evenly over the tops while still warm.
- Allow the treats to cool and set for 30 minutes at room temperature.
- Use a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut stars from both pans.
- Transfer the white frosting into a piping bag and pipe frosting onto the plain side of half the cereal stars.
- Place another star on top of each frosted piece to create sandwich-style treats.
- Serve immediately or store in an airtight container at room temperature.
Notes
- Use fresh marshmallows for the softest and chewiest texture.
- Grease your hands lightly with cooking spray before pressing the mixture into the pans.
- Do not overheat the marshmallows or the treats may become hard.
- A metal cookie cutter works best for cutting clean star shapes.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
