Description

A festive and refreshing 4th of July Watermelon Appetizer made with juicy watermelon stars, smoked provolone cheese stars, and fresh blueberries. This patriotic no-cook appetizer is easy to assemble, kid-friendly, and perfect for summer barbecues, picnics, and Independence Day celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 thick slices watermelon (about 1-inch thick each), rind removed
  • 5 slices smoked provolone cheese (about 4 oz / 115 g total)
  • 20 fresh blueberries
  • 10 decorative toothpicks

Instructions

  1. Cut two 1-inch-thick slices of watermelon and remove the rind.
  2. Using a large star-shaped cookie cutter, cut approximately 10 watermelon stars from the slices.
  3. Lay the smoked provolone slices on a cutting board and use a small star-shaped cookie cutter to cut 10 cheese stars.
  4. Arrange the watermelon stars on a serving platter.
  5. Place one cheese star on top of each watermelon star.
  6. Thread 2 blueberries onto each decorative toothpick.
  7. Insert a blueberry-topped toothpick through the center of each cheese star and watermelon star.
  8. Refrigerate the appetizers until ready to serve.
  9. Serve chilled and enjoy.

Notes

  • Pat the watermelon dry with paper towels before assembling to reduce excess moisture.
  • Prepare the watermelon and cheese stars several hours ahead and assemble shortly before serving.
  • Mozzarella or Monterey Jack can be substituted for smoked provolone.
  • Keep refrigerated until serving for the best texture and flavor.
  • For a sweeter variation, drizzle lightly with balsamic glaze before serving.
