Description

Apple Slab Pie is a crowd-friendly dessert featuring a buttery flaky crust, warmly spiced apple filling, and a sweet maple icing drizzle. This easy sheet pan apple pie is perfect for holidays, family gatherings, and any occasion where you need a delicious homemade dessert that serves a group.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour: creates the flaky, sturdy pie crust
  • 1 teaspoon salt: enhances the flavor of the pastry
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar: adds slight sweetness to the crust
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed: creates rich, flaky layers
  • 1/2 cup ice water: helps bring the dough together
  • 10 cups peeled and thinly sliced apples: provides the sweet and tender fruit filling
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar: sweetens the apple mixture
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour: thickens the apple filling
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice: brightens flavor and prevents browning
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract: adds warm aroma and flavor
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon: provides classic apple pie spice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg: adds depth to the filling
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves: adds warm spice notes
  • 1 large egg: used for brushing the crust for a golden finish
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar: optional topping for texture
  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar: creates the maple icing base
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup: gives the glaze rich maple flavor
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk or heavy cream: adjusts icing consistency

Instructions

  1. Prepare the crust by mixing flour, salt, and sugar in a large bowl. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with visible butter pieces.
  2. Add ice water gradually and mix until the dough comes together. Divide into two portions, shape into discs, wrap, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  3. Prepare the apple filling by combining sliced apples, sugar, flour, lemon juice, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Mix until the apples are evenly coated.
  4. Preheat the oven and prepare a 10×15-inch jelly roll pan. Roll out one dough portion into a rectangle and fit it into the pan.
  5. Spread the seasoned apple filling evenly over the bottom crust.
  6. Roll out the second dough portion and place it over the apples. Seal the edges, crimp with a fork, and cut small vents in the top crust.
  7. Brush the crust with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
  8. Bake until the crust is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling, about 40-46 minutes.
  9. Cool the pie completely before preparing the icing. Mix confectioners’ sugar, maple syrup, and milk until smooth, then drizzle over the pie before slicing.

Notes

  • Use a combination of sweet and tart apples such as Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Pink Lady, or Fuji for the best flavor.
  • Keep the butter and dough cold to achieve a flaky pie crust.
  • Do not overmix the dough because it can make the crust tough.
  • Allow the pie to cool before adding maple icing so the glaze sets properly.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to several days.
  • The baked pie can be frozen and thawed before serving.
