Description

Black Mulberry Crumble Bar is a buttery, crumbly dessert layered with a rich, tangy black mulberry filling. This easy baked treat combines a golden crisp topping with a jam-like fruit center, making it perfect for any season using fresh or frozen mulberries.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 200 g butter, cut into cubes and frozen
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 teaspoons vanilla sugar (or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 500 g black mulberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for filling)

Instructions

  1. Place black mulberries in a saucepan and add 1/2 cup sugar. Cook over high heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens to a jam-like consistency. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F) and line a baking pan with parchment paper.
  3. In a large bowl, mix flour, 1 cup sugar, vanilla sugar, and baking powder.
  4. Add the frozen butter cubes and egg. Rub the mixture with your fingertips until it forms a coarse, crumbly texture.
  5. Press two-thirds of the crumble mixture evenly into the prepared baking pan to form the base.
  6. Spread the mulberry filling evenly over the base layer.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining crumble mixture over the top.
  8. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
  9. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely before slicing into bars.

Notes

  • Use frozen butter to achieve a light and crumbly texture.
  • Do not overmix the dough to avoid a dense crumble.
  • Cook the mulberry filling until thick to prevent soggy bars.
  • Allow the bars to cool fully before cutting for clean slices.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days or freeze for longer storage.
