Description
These Butter Toffee Pretzels are a delicious sweet and salty snack made with crunchy mini pretzel twists coated in homemade buttery brown sugar toffee. Heath English toffee bits add extra crunch and rich caramel flavor to every bite. Baked slowly at a low temperature, these homemade toffee pretzels develop a crisp, golden coating that makes them perfect for holiday parties, Christmas snack trays, movie nights, and homemade edible gifts.
Ingredients
Scale
- 15 ounces tiny pretzel twists
- 1 cup light or dark brown sugar
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) salted butter, sliced into pats
- 1/3 cup light corn syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 8 ounces (1 package) Heath English toffee bits
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 250°F.
- Cover a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and generously coat it with nonstick baking spray. Set aside.
- Add the brown sugar, salted butter, and light corn syrup to a large, heavy-bottomed stockpot.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring continuously, until the mixture reaches a gentle boil.
- Reduce the heat and continue stirring while the mixture boils for 5 minutes.
- Remove the pot from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract, baking soda, and salt. The mixture will bubble and foam before settling.
- Add approximately one-third of the pretzels and one-third of the Heath English toffee bits. Stir until coated.
- Add the next third of the pretzels and toffee bits. Stir again until everything is evenly coated.
- Add the remaining pretzels and toffee bits and give everything a final stir, distributing the toffee throughout.
- Immediately transfer the coated pretzels to the prepared baking sheet and spread them into an even layer.
- Bake at 250°F for 50 minutes. At the 30-minute mark, turn the pretzels, break apart large clusters, and spread them out again.
- Repeat the turning and breaking process at 40 minutes.
- Remove the baking sheet from the oven after 50 minutes and allow the pretzels to cool for approximately 30 minutes.
- Break apart any remaining clusters once completely cool. Transfer to an airtight container and store at room temperature.
Notes
- Prepare all ingredients before cooking the toffee because the mixture begins to stiffen quickly after being removed from the heat.
- Use a heavy-bottomed stockpot to distribute heat evenly and help prevent the sugar mixture from scorching.
- Work quickly after removing the toffee from the stove. You have approximately 90 seconds to mix in the pretzels before the coating becomes too stiff.
- Add the pretzels and toffee bits in three batches to make mixing easier.
- Keep stirring continuously while the toffee boils for 5 minutes.
- Do not increase the oven temperature. Baking at 250°F helps prevent the sugar coating from burning.
- Turn the pretzels at 30 and 40 minutes to break up clusters and ensure even baking.
- Allow the pretzels to cool completely before storing so the toffee coating can become crisp.
- If the pretzel bottoms appear oily, gently blot them with paper towels. Parchment paper can also be used instead of foil and nonstick spray.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature in a cool, dry place. Humidity can make the coating sticky.
- Freezing is not recommended because the pretzels may become sticky after thawing.
- For extra flavor, drizzle the cooled pretzels with melted chocolate or add chopped nuts.
