Description

This easy Chicken Lo Mein recipe is a homemade takeout-style noodle dish made with tender chicken, soft lo mein noodles, fresh vegetables, and a savory sweet sauce. It is a quick and flavorful meal perfect for busy weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz lo mein noodles: Provides the classic chewy noodle texture and base for the dish
  • 1 lb chicken breast: Thinly sliced for tender, protein-rich bites
  • 2 tablespoons oil: Used for stir-frying ingredients and adding richness
  • 2 carrots: Sliced for sweetness, color, and crunch
  • 1 medium onion: Adds savory depth and aroma
  • 2 cups broccoli florets: Adds freshness, nutrition, and texture
  • 3 garlic cloves: Creates a fragrant flavor base
  • 1 cup chicken broth: Builds the savory sauce
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce: Adds salty umami flavor
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil: Provides a nutty aroma and authentic taste
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar: Balances the sauce with mild sweetness

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce by mixing chicken broth, soy sauce, sesame oil, and brown sugar in a bowl until well combined.
  2. Cook the lo mein noodles according to package directions, then drain and set aside.
  3. Slice the chicken, carrots, onion, and broccoli into evenly sized pieces for even cooking.
  4. Heat oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat and cook the chicken until golden and fully cooked. Remove and set aside.
  5. Cook the onion in the same pan until lightly browned, then remove if needed.
  6. Add carrots and broccoli to the skillet and stir-fry until slightly tender. Add garlic and cook until fragrant.
  7. Return chicken and onion to the pan, then pour in the prepared sauce and simmer briefly.
  8. Add cooked noodles and toss everything together until evenly coated with sauce. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use traditional lo mein noodles for the best texture, but spaghetti or other wheat noodles can work as substitutes.
  • Do not overcook the noodles because they will continue absorbing sauce during stir-frying.
  • For extra flavor, cook ingredients separately to allow better browning and texture.
  • Add bell peppers, mushrooms, snow peas, or cabbage for additional vegetables.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • Reheat gently with a splash of water, broth, or oil to refresh the noodles.
