Description

This Chocolate Mousse Cake is a rich and elegant layered dessert featuring moist chocolate cake, a light and creamy chocolate mousse filling, and a smooth, glossy ganache topping. Perfect for celebrations or indulgent treats, it delivers a balanced combination of deep chocolate flavor and airy texture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream (for mousse)
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate, chopped (for mousse)
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for mousse)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (for ganache)
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate, chopped (for ganache)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla extract.
  4. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk into the wet mixture. Mix until just combined, then stir in hot water until smooth.
  5. Divide batter between pans and bake for 25–30 minutes. Cool completely.
  6. Heat cream for mousse until simmering, pour over chocolate, let sit, then stir until smooth. Cool to room temperature.
  7. Whip remaining cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form. Fold in cooled chocolate mixture and chill for 1 hour.
  8. Heat cream for ganache and pour over chopped chocolate. Stir until smooth and glossy.
  9. Place one cake layer on a plate, spread mousse evenly, then top with the second layer.
  10. Pour ganache over the cake, letting it drip down the sides. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for better mixing.
  • Do not overmix the batter to keep the cake soft and fluffy.
  • Let the chocolate mixture cool before folding into whipped cream to prevent deflation.
  • Chill the cake properly to help the mousse and ganache set firmly.
  • Use high-quality chocolate for the best flavor.
