Description

Christmas Crack Saltine Toffee is an easy holiday candy made with crispy saltine crackers, buttery brown sugar toffee, and a smooth layer of melted chocolate. Add nuts, candy, or festive sprinkles for a customizable Christmas treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 40 salted saltine crackers (about 1 sleeve)
  • 1 cup (227g) salted or unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (220g) packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1 package (270–300g) milk or semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Chopped nuts, candy, crushed peppermint, or sprinkles, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a large baking sheet with heavy-duty aluminum foil. If using regular foil, lightly coat it with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Fold up the edges of the foil to help contain the toffee.
  3. Add the butter and brown sugar to a medium saucepan and melt over medium heat.
  4. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and boil for 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
  5. Quickly pour the hot toffee mixture over the saltine crackers and spread it evenly to completely cover them.
  6. Bake for 5 minutes. Turn off the oven and remove the baking sheet.
  7. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let them sit for 1–2 minutes, or until shiny and softened.
  8. Spread the softened chocolate into an even layer. If the chocolate is still too firm to spread after about 4 minutes, return the baking sheet to the warm oven for 1 minute.
  9. Add chopped nuts, candy, crushed peppermint, sprinkles, or other desired toppings while the chocolate is still soft.
  10. Refrigerate for 1–2 hours, or until completely firm. Peel away the foil and break the Christmas Crack Saltine Toffee into pieces.

Notes

  • Set a timer when boiling the butter and brown sugar so the toffee cooks for the full 5 minutes.
  • Prepare the crackers before starting the toffee because the hot mixture needs to be poured and spread quickly.
  • Milk chocolate creates a sweeter result, while semi-sweet chocolate provides a richer cocoa flavor.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • Christmas Crack Saltine Toffee can be frozen in an airtight freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.
