Description

Christmas Crack with Pretzels is an easy sweet-and-salty holiday candy made with crunchy mini pretzels, buttery brown sugar toffee, melted semi-sweet chocolate, and colorful sprinkles. This irresistible Christmas treat takes just 25 minutes to prepare and cook, making it perfect for holiday parties, dessert trays, and homemade gifts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz mini pretzels
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, softened
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Colored Christmas sprinkles, as needed

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and spray lightly with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Break the mini pretzels into smaller pieces and arrange them in an even layer across the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Combine the butter and brown sugar in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the butter melts and the ingredients are combined.
  4. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil. Stop stirring and cook for 3–5 minutes, until it becomes foamy and develops a rich caramel color.
  5. Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the pretzels. It is fine if some areas are not completely covered, as the toffee will spread in the oven.
  6. Bake for 5 minutes, allowing the toffee to bubble and spread across the pretzels.
  7. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee.
  8. Let the chocolate chips sit for 3–5 minutes to soften, then spread the melted chocolate evenly over the surface with a silicone spatula.
  9. Immediately decorate with colored Christmas sprinkles or your preferred toppings while the chocolate is still soft.
  10. Refrigerate until the chocolate and toffee are completely firm. Remove from the baking sheet, break into pieces, and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Mini pretzels are recommended because they are easy to break into pieces once the candy has set.
  • Watch the butter and brown sugar mixture carefully to prevent the toffee from burning.
  • If the chocolate chips do not soften sufficiently, allow them to sit a little longer before spreading.
  • Customize the topping with crushed candy canes, chopped nuts, toffee bits, crushed cookies, or candy-coated chocolates.
  • Try dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or a combination of semi-sweet and white chocolate for different flavors.
  • Saltine crackers, Ritz crackers, or graham crackers can replace the pretzels for a different variation.
  • Allow the candy to harden completely before breaking it into pieces.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and texture.
  • Prep time: 10 minutes. Cook time: 15 minutes. Additional chilling time is needed for the candy to set.
