Ingredients
Scale
- 2¾ cups all-purpose flour: Provides structure and a soft bite
- 1 tsp baking soda: Helps the cookies rise
- ½ tsp baking powder: Adds softness and extra lift
- ½ tsp salt: Balances sweetness and enhances flavor
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened: Adds richness and a soft texture
- 1½ cups granulated sugar: Sweetens and aids in the cookie’s texture
- 1 large egg: Binds the ingredients and adds moisture
- 1 tsp vanilla extract: Adds warmth and depth of flavor
- ½ tsp almond extract: Enhances the sweet, candy-like profile
- Pink food coloring: For fun, colorful swirls
- Blue food coloring: For contrast and cotton candy visuals
- ½ tsp cotton candy flavoring (optional): Boosts the nostalgic flavor
- Sprinkles (optional): Adds color and festive texture
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, almond extract, and optional cotton candy flavoring.
- Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until just combined—avoid overmixing.
- Divide dough into two equal portions. Color one with pink food coloring and the other with blue. Knead until colors are even.
- Take small pieces of each colored dough, press them together, roll into a ball, and slightly flatten. Add sprinkles if using.
- Place cookies on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 8–10 minutes, until edges are set and centers remain soft.
- Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- Do not overbake – cookies will continue to bake on the sheet.
- Chilling dough for 15–20 minutes can make rolling and swirling easier.
- Cotton candy flavoring is optional but adds a nostalgic touch.
- Cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
- Unbaked dough balls freeze well; bake straight from frozen with 1–2 extra minutes.
