Description

Country Fried Chicken is a Southern classic with crispy breading and juicy chicken. This easy recipe will give you restaurant-quality fried chicken at home, perfect for any family meal or special occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs, whisked
  • 3 teaspoons salt
  • 1 ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (plain or Italian)
  • 2 ½ teaspoons seasoned salt
  • ¾ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 ½ cups vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Cover each chicken breast with plastic wrap and use a meat tenderizer to pound the chicken to about ½ inch thickness.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, salt, and buttermilk. Add chicken breasts to the marinade and let it sit in the fridge for 1-2 hours (or overnight for best results).
  3. After marinating, take the chicken out and let it rest for 25-30 minutes at room temperature.
  4. In another bowl, mix together the flour, breadcrumbs, seasoned salt, paprika, cayenne pepper, and black pepper to make the breading mix.
  5. Coat each chicken breast with the breading mixture. Press the breading into the chicken to ensure it sticks evenly on all sides.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil reaches 350°F, carefully add the chicken and fry for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Once the chicken is cooked through, transfer it to a wire rack to drain excess oil and keep the breading crispy.
  8. Serve with mashed potatoes, gravy, cornbread, or green bean casserole.

Notes

  • Pounding the chicken ensures even cooking and helps the breading adhere better, providing the signature crispy texture.
  • If you prefer spicier fried chicken, increase the amount of cayenne pepper in the breading mix.
  • For a gluten-free option, replace the flour and breadcrumbs with gluten-free alternatives.
  • Let the chicken rest on a wire rack to prevent the breading from becoming soggy.
