Description
Cowboy butter is a rich, zesty, and slightly spicy butter sauce made with garlic, lemon, mustard, and fresh herbs. Perfect as a dipping sauce or compound butter, it enhances steak, seafood, chicken, and vegetables with bold flavor.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened or melted
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon spicy brown mustard or Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon fresh chives, chopped
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped
- 1 teaspoon paprika (smoked or hot)
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes or 1 teaspoon hot sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Soften the butter at room temperature if making compound butter, or melt it gently over low heat if preparing a dipping sauce.
- Mince the garlic finely and prepare all herbs by chopping them into small pieces.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the butter, minced garlic, mustard, lemon juice, and lemon zest. Mix until smooth and creamy.
- Add parsley, chives, and thyme, stirring until evenly distributed.
- Mix in paprika, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Stir thoroughly to combine all flavors.
- For compound butter, place the mixture onto plastic wrap, roll into a log, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour until firm. Slice before serving.
- For dipping sauce, pour the melted mixture into a serving bowl and serve warm.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if needed before serving.
Notes
- Use high-quality butter for the best flavor.
- Adjust spice levels by reducing or increasing cayenne and red pepper flakes.
- Fresh herbs provide better flavor, but dried herbs can be used if needed.
- Do not overheat butter to avoid separating the ingredients.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- Freeze compound butter for up to 3 months and slice as needed.
