Description
Frankenstein Rice Krispies Treats are fun Halloween cereal bars made with gooey marshmallows, crispy rice cereal, green food coloring, dark chocolate hair, candy eyes, icing, and Tootsie Roll bolts. These easy no-bake monster treats are perfect for Halloween parties, classroom celebrations, and spooky dessert tables.
Ingredients
Scale
- 10 ounces large marshmallows, or mini marshmallows
- 8 cups Rice Krispies cereal
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup marshmallow fluff
- 5-8 drops green food coloring
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 18 large candy eyes
- 9 small Tootsie Rolls
- 1/2 cup black or brown icing
Instructions
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the marshmallows and marshmallow fluff. Stir constantly over medium-high heat until completely melted and smooth.
- Add 5-8 drops of green food coloring, adjusting the amount as needed to achieve your desired Frankenstein-green color. Stir well.
- In a large bowl, quickly combine the melted marshmallow mixture with the Rice Krispies cereal. Stir until evenly coated, working quickly because the mixture will begin to set as it cools.
- Press the cereal mixture evenly into a greased 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
- Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes, or until firm.
- Remove the treats from the refrigerator and cut them into approximately 3 x 4-inch rectangular pieces.
- Place the dark chocolate chips and vegetable oil in a microwave-safe bowl and stir to coat the chocolate with the oil.
- Microwave the chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until melted and smooth. Do not overheat or allow water to come into contact with the chocolate.
- Dip the top inch of each Rice Krispies treat into the melted chocolate to create Frankenstein’s hair. Place on a greased cooling rack or another nonstick surface until the chocolate becomes firm.
- Use small dots of black or brown icing to attach two candy eyes to each treat.
- Use the same icing to draw a mouth beneath the eyes.
- Cut each Tootsie Roll in half and use icing to attach the pieces to the sides of the Frankenstein heads as bolts.
- Allow the icing and chocolate to set completely, then serve and enjoy.
Notes
- Work quickly after mixing the cereal with the marshmallow mixture because it becomes firmer as it cools.
- Lightly coat your hands with butter, oil, or a little water before pressing the sticky cereal mixture into the baking dish.
- Do not press the mixture too firmly into the pan or the finished treats may become dense and hard.
- For the best texture, serve the treats at room temperature or slightly chilled. Very cold treats can become hard, while warming them may cause them to soften or melt.
- Dark chocolate gives the strongest contrast against the green treats, but milk or semi-sweet chocolate can also be used.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container, separating layers with parchment or wax paper.
- For longer storage, wrap the treats individually in parchment paper and freeze them in a freezer-safe airtight container for up to 3 months. Fresh treats will have the best texture.
