Description

Frito Pie is a hearty Tex-Mex comfort food made with crunchy Fritos corn chips, savory homemade chili, melted cheddar cheese, and fresh toppings. This easy family-friendly recipe is perfect for busy weeknights, game day gatherings, and casual dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 ounces) chili beans, undrained
  • 1 can (10 ounces) diced tomatoes with green chilies
  • 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 cups Fritos corn chips
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions
  • 1/4 cup sliced black olives (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Drain excess grease.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  3. Stir in the chili beans, diced tomatoes with green chilies, tomato sauce, chili powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Bring the chili mixture to a simmer and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened and flavorful.
  5. Spread a layer of Fritos corn chips into serving bowls or plates.
  6. Spoon the hot chili mixture evenly over the corn chips.
  7. Top with shredded cheddar cheese and allow it to melt slightly from the heat.
  8. Finish with sour cream, green onions, black olives, and cilantro if desired. Serve immediately while warm and crunchy.

Notes

  • Serve immediately to keep the corn chips crunchy.
  • Use freshly shredded cheese for smoother melting.
  • Add jalapeños or hot sauce for extra spice.
  • The chili mixture can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 4 days.
  • Store leftover chili separately from the chips to avoid sogginess.
  • Ground turkey or plant-based meat can be substituted for ground beef.
