Description
Graveyard Dirt Cups are an easy no-bake Halloween dessert made with layers of creamy chocolate pudding, crushed Oreo cookie dirt, and spooky decorations. Cookie tombstones, ghost Peeps, candy pumpkins, and Halloween sprinkles turn each individual pudding cup into a fun edible graveyard.
Ingredients
Scale
- 38.2 ounces Oreo cookies (2 family-size 19.1-ounce packages)
- 4 cups whole milk
- 7.8 ounces instant chocolate pudding mix (2 3.9-ounce packages)
- 16 ounces whipped topping, thawed
- 1 cup chocolate syrup, divided
- Milano cookies, as needed for tombstones
- Black cookie icing, as needed for decorating
- Ghost Peeps, as needed
- Mini pumpkin candies, as needed
- Halloween sprinkles, as needed
Instructions
- Place the Oreo cookies in a food processor in batches and process until they form crumbs. Transfer the crumbs to a large bowl and set aside.
- Add the cold whole milk and instant chocolate pudding mix to a large bowl. Stir or whisk for about 2 minutes, until the pudding begins to thicken.
- Fold the thawed whipped topping into the pudding until completely incorporated and no white streaks remain.
- Add 1/2 cup of the chocolate syrup and stir only a few times, leaving visible chocolate streaks. Refrigerate the pudding mixture until ready to assemble.
- Arrange 18 clear 9-ounce cups or similar serving containers. Add 2 tablespoons of Oreo crumbs to the bottom of each cup.
- Spoon just under 1/4 cup of chocolate pudding mixture over the crumbs in each cup.
- Add another 2 tablespoons of Oreo crumbs to each cup, followed by the remaining pudding mixture.
- Top each cup with approximately 1 tablespoon of additional Oreo crumbs.
- Combine the remaining 1/2 cup chocolate syrup with the leftover Oreo crumbs. Stir until the crumbs become moist and clumpy to resemble freshly dug dirt.
- Decorate Milano cookies with black cookie icing to create tombstones. Write RIP or another short Halloween message on each cookie.
- Gently press the cookie tombstones and ghost Peeps into the pudding so they stand upright.
- Add the moist Oreo dirt around the decorations, then finish with mini pumpkin candies and Halloween sprinkles.
- Chill until ready to serve or serve immediately.
Notes
- Crush the Oreos in batches for a more consistent dirt-like texture.
- Do not completely mix the chocolate syrup into the pudding; leaving streaks creates a richer appearance.
- Clear 9-ounce cups work especially well because the pudding and cookie layers remain visible.
- The recipe makes approximately 18 9-ounce cups. Smaller cups can be used for children or larger parties.
- The pudding and Oreo layers can be assembled up to one day ahead and stored covered in the refrigerator.
- Add cookie tombstones, ghost Peeps, and other crunchy decorations closer to serving so they do not become too soft.
- Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to about 3 days.
- Freezing is not recommended because it can negatively affect the texture of the pudding and whipped topping.
- Chocolate sandwich cookies can replace Oreos if desired.
- Gummy worms, candy skeletons, marshmallow ghosts, or other Halloween candies can replace or supplement the decorations.
- The dessert can also be assembled in one large clear bowl or baking dish instead of individual cups.
- Nutrition information does not include optional garnishes and decorations.
