Description
Halloween Popcorn Balls are an easy, colorful no-bake Halloween treat made with buttery popcorn, gooey marshmallows, chocolate candies, and festive sprinkles. They are perfect for Halloween parties, movie nights, classroom celebrations, and spooky dessert tables.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 bags microwave popcorn, popped (about 18 cups)
- 8 cups miniature marshmallows
- 1/2 cup butter
- 2-3 drops neon green gel food coloring, plus more if desired
- 1 1/2 cups Halloween-colored M&M’s
- Halloween sprinkles, as needed for mixing and decorating
Instructions
- Pop the microwave popcorn and remove all unpopped kernels. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Lightly coat an extra-large mixing bowl with nonstick cooking spray, then add the popped popcorn.
- Add the miniature marshmallows and butter to a large saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until completely melted and smooth.
- Stir 2-3 drops of neon green gel food coloring into the melted marshmallow mixture. Add additional coloring if a brighter shade is desired.
- Pour the marshmallow mixture over the popcorn and gently fold with a rubber spatula until the popcorn is evenly coated.
- Add the Halloween-colored M&M’s and sprinkles, then gently stir until evenly distributed.
- Lightly spray your hands with nonstick cooking spray and press the mixture into medium-sized popcorn balls. Reapply cooking spray if the mixture begins sticking to your hands.
- Roll or press each popcorn ball into additional Halloween sprinkles and place it on the prepared baking sheets.
- Allow the Halloween Popcorn Balls to cool and set completely. Reshape them every few minutes if necessary while the marshmallow coating firms up.
Notes
- Remove unpopped popcorn kernels before mixing to prevent hard kernels from ending up inside the popcorn balls.
- A cooling rack placed over a rimmed baking sheet can help separate unpopped kernels from the popcorn.
- Gel food coloring provides a more vibrant color without adding much liquid to the marshmallow mixture.
- If the popcorn balls loosen while cooling, gently press them back into shape until the marshmallow coating sets.
- Air-popped or stovetop popcorn can replace microwave popcorn. About 1/2 cup unpopped kernels makes approximately 18-20 cups of popped popcorn.
- Store cooled popcorn balls in an airtight container at room temperature and enjoy within one week for the best texture.
