Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 5 tablespoons butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 4-5 tablespoons milk (for frosting)
  • 3-4 drops orange food coloring (for frosting)
  • Halloween sprinkles (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a standard baking sheet with oil or line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl or stand mixer, cream together butter, vegetable oil, granulated sugar, and powdered sugar on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  3. Add milk and eggs, mixing until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together baking powder, cream of tartar, salt, and flour.
  5. Gradually mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the bars cool in the pan for at least 20 minutes before frosting.
  9. For the frosting: In a large bowl, beat together softened butter and sour cream until smooth.
  10. Add vanilla extract and mix well.
  11. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing until smooth.
  12. Add milk one tablespoon at a time until frosting reaches a spreadable, cake batter-like consistency.
  13. Mix in orange food coloring until evenly colored.
  14. Spread frosting over cooled bars and top with Halloween sprinkles immediately.
  15. Chill slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the dough to keep the bars soft and tender.
  • Make sure bars are fully cooled before frosting to prevent melting.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
  • You can make the bars a day ahead and frost them before serving.
