Description

This easy Halloween Taco Dip is a festive no-cook party appetizer made with layers of refried beans, taco-seasoned cream cheese, guacamole, shredded cheese, fresh vegetables, and black olives. A creamy spider web decoration turns this classic layered taco dip into the perfect spooky Halloween appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 3 tablespoons taco seasoning
  • 1 (16-ounce) can refried beans
  • 16 ounces guacamole, homemade or store-bought
  • 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese or Mexican cheese blend
  • 1/2 cup fresh tomatoes, diced
  • 1/2 small yellow onion, diced
  • 1/4 cup sliced black olives, plus 1 whole olive for decorating if desired
  • 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped
  • Tortilla chips, for serving

Instructions

  1. Place the softened cream cheese and sour cream in a mixing bowl and mix until smooth and completely combined.
  2. Remove 1/4 cup of the cream cheese and sour cream mixture and set it aside for the spider web decoration.
  3. Add the taco seasoning to the remaining cream cheese mixture and stir until evenly combined.
  4. Spread the refried beans evenly across the bottom of a 9-inch pie dish and smooth the surface with a spatula.
  5. Carefully spread the taco-seasoned cream cheese mixture over the refried beans.
  6. Spoon the guacamole over the cream cheese layer and gently smooth it into an even layer.
  7. Use a toothpick or the tip of a knife to lightly trace a spider web pattern over the guacamole.
  8. Transfer the reserved cream cheese mixture to a piping bag and pipe it over the traced lines to create the spider web.
  9. Sprinkle the shredded cheese around the outside edge of the spider web.
  10. Add the diced tomatoes, diced onion, sliced black olives, and chopped cilantro over the cheese.
  11. If desired, create an edible spider using one whole black olive for the body and thin olive slices for the legs.
  12. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve, then serve the Halloween Taco Dip cold with tortilla chips.

Notes

  • Allow the cream cheese to soften to room temperature before mixing so the creamy layer is smooth and free of lumps.
  • Remember to reserve 1/4 cup of the cream cheese and sour cream mixture before adding the taco seasoning so it stays light enough for the spider web.
  • Use a thick guacamole for easier layering and decorating.
  • A 9-inch round pie dish works especially well for creating the spider web design.
  • For a spicy variation, add diced jalapenos, pepper Jack cheese, or hot sauce.
  • Cooked and cooled taco-seasoned ground beef, turkey, or shredded chicken can be added as an extra layer.
  • Halloween Taco Dip can be prepared up to one day ahead, although the guacamole may begin to brown over time.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • Freezing is not recommended because the creamy ingredients, guacamole, and fresh vegetables can change texture after thawing.
