Description

This Mouthwatering German Chocolate Poke Cake is a rich and indulgent dessert featuring a moist chocolate cake infused with sweet caramel filling and topped with a luscious coconut pecan frosting and melted chocolate. Perfect for gatherings, this easy-to-make cake delivers a decadent flavor in every bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box German chocolate cake mix (15.25 oz)
  • 1 1/3 cups water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk (14 oz)
  • 1 jar caramel topping (12 oz)
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 can evaporated milk (12 oz)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 large egg yolks, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the German chocolate cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs until smooth, about 2 minutes.
  3. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  4. Let the cake cool for 10 minutes, then poke holes all over using the handle of a wooden spoon.
  5. In a bowl, combine sweetened condensed milk and caramel topping, then pour evenly over the cake, allowing it to soak into the holes.
  6. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine evaporated milk, granulated sugar, brown sugar, butter, and egg yolks. Stir constantly for 10–12 minutes until thickened and golden.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract, chopped pecans, and shredded coconut.
  8. Spread the coconut pecan mixture evenly over the cake.
  9. Sprinkle semi-sweet chocolate chips on top and allow them to melt, then spread evenly.
  10. Let the cake cool completely before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Do not overbake the cake to ensure it stays moist and absorbs the filling היטely.
  • Poke holes evenly but avoid going too deep to prevent sogginess.
  • Stir the topping constantly to prevent burning or curdling.
  • Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving for cleaner slices.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
