Ingredients
Scale
- 1 box German chocolate cake mix (15.25 oz)
- 1 1/3 cups water
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk (14 oz)
- 1 jar caramel topping (12 oz)
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
- 1 can evaporated milk (12 oz)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 3 large egg yolks, lightly beaten
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, mix the German chocolate cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs until smooth, about 2 minutes.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool for 10 minutes, then poke holes all over using the handle of a wooden spoon.
- In a bowl, combine sweetened condensed milk and caramel topping, then pour evenly over the cake, allowing it to soak into the holes.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine evaporated milk, granulated sugar, brown sugar, butter, and egg yolks. Stir constantly for 10–12 minutes until thickened and golden.
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract, chopped pecans, and shredded coconut.
- Spread the coconut pecan mixture evenly over the cake.
- Sprinkle semi-sweet chocolate chips on top and allow them to melt, then spread evenly.
- Let the cake cool completely before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Do not overbake the cake to ensure it stays moist and absorbs the filling היטely.
- Poke holes evenly but avoid going too deep to prevent sogginess.
- Stir the topping constantly to prevent burning or curdling.
- Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving for cleaner slices.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
