Description

This Nectarine Compote Dessert is a quick and refreshing summer fruit dessert made with fresh nectarines, honey, sugar, and a touch of salt. Cooked into a light syrup in just minutes, it can be served warm or chilled over pound cake, angel food cake, ice cream, pancakes, waffles, yogurt, or other favorite desserts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 medium nectarines, chopped into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry the nectarines thoroughly.
  2. Cut the nectarines into approximately 1-inch bite-sized chunks.
  3. Add the chopped nectarines, honey, sugar, salt, and water to a medium saucepan.
  4. Place the saucepan over medium heat.
  5. Cook while stirring frequently until the fruit softens and releases its juices.
  6. Continue cooking for about 5 minutes until a light syrup forms and the mixture thickens slightly.
  7. Remove from the heat and allow the compote to cool slightly.
  8. Serve warm over pound cake, angel food cake, pancakes, waffles, yogurt, or vanilla ice cream, or refrigerate and serve chilled.

Notes

  • Choose nectarines that are ripe but still firm for the best texture.
  • White nectarines can be substituted for regular nectarines.
  • Add 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon or a pinch of nutmeg for a warm spiced flavor.
  • Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract after cooking for extra richness.
  • Add 1 teaspoon lemon or orange zest for a bright citrus note.
  • Mix in 1/2 cup blueberries or raspberries for a mixed-fruit variation.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Freeze for up to 3 months and thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.
  • The recipe can also be made in the microwave by cooking on high for 2–3 minutes and stirring halfway through.
