Description
Old-Fashioned Peach Ice Cream is a creamy, refreshing dessert made with ripe peaches, sugar, and a rich custard base. It captures the taste of summer in every scoop, offering a smooth, peach-flavored treat with bits of peach throughout. Perfect for enjoying on warm days or any time you crave a homemade frozen dessert.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 medium-sized fresh peaches (peeled, pitted, and chopped – approximately 2 cups)
- ¼ cup sugar
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup milk
- ¾ cup sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 4 egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- Place chopped peaches in a bowl. Add ¼ cup sugar and stir. Cover and let sit for at least 1 hour.
- Once peaches have released a lot of juice, place peaches and juice in a food processor. Pulse 3-4 times just until peaches are broken up into small pieces.
- In a saucepan, heat heavy cream, milk, and ¾ cup sugar along with the salt. Warm over medium heat, stirring often until the sugar has dissolved, about 3-4 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, beat egg yolks until smooth and lighter in color.
- Take ½ cup of the heated cream mixture and slowly pour it into the egg yolks while whisking constantly.
- Pour the egg mixture back into the remaining cream mixture and heat over medium heat for 5-8 minutes, stirring often. The mixture will thicken enough to coat the back of a spoon and should reach 175°F to 185°F.
- Place a fine strainer over a bowl and pour the custard mixture through it to remove any small bits of egg or lumps.
- Stir in vanilla extract and the peach mixture with its juices.
- Cover and refrigerate the mixture for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- Once chilled, pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn for 20-25 minutes.
- Transfer the ice cream to a freezer-safe container and freeze for at least 2 hours before serving.
Notes
- Ensure your custard is fully chilled before churning for the best texture.
- If you don’t have an ice cream maker, you can manually stir the mixture every 30 minutes while it freezes to avoid large ice crystals.
- Use ripe peaches for maximum flavor, or frozen unsweetened peaches if fresh ones aren’t available.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the coldest part of your freezer.
