Ingredients
Scale
- 1/2 cup softened butter
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 large egg
- 3/4 cup red, white, and blue M&Ms
- 3/4 cup chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons patriotic sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together 1/2 cup softened butter, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, and 1/2 cup brown sugar for about 2 minutes until light and fluffy.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon baking soda.
- Add 1 large egg and 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract to the butter mixture and beat until fully combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Fold in 3/4 cup red, white, and blue M&Ms and 3/4 cup chocolate chips by hand.
- Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them a few inches apart.
- Press a few extra M&Ms onto the tops of the cookies and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons patriotic sprinkles.
- Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden while the centers remain soft.
- Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for several minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- Do not overbake the cookies; the centers should remain slightly soft when removed from the oven.
- Use room-temperature butter and egg for the best texture.
- Mix the M&Ms gently to avoid cracking the candy shells and bleeding colors into the dough.
- Store cookies in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
- Freeze baked cookies for up to 3 months between layers of parchment paper.
- White chocolate chips can be substituted for regular chocolate chips.
