Description

This shrimp dirty rice recipe is a bold and comforting Southern-inspired dish made with juicy shrimp, seasoned ground beef, pork sausage, fluffy rice, and Cajun spices. Cooked in one skillet, it delivers rich flavor, hearty texture, and satisfying heat that makes it perfect for family dinners or meal prep.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground pork sausage
  • 10-12 medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 4 cups cooked white rice
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped onions and bell peppers
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 tsp seafood seasoning
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 3 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Season the shrimp evenly with seafood seasoning and set aside.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the shrimp for 2-3 minutes per side until pink and slightly curled. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Add the remaining tablespoon of oil to the skillet. Add the ground beef and pork sausage, breaking the meat apart while cooking.
  4. Once the meat starts browning, add the chopped onions, bell peppers, and minced garlic. Cook until the vegetables soften and the meat is fully browned.
  5. Stir in oregano, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, black pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper.
  6. Add the flour and stir continuously for 1-2 minutes until fully incorporated.
  7. Slowly pour in the chicken broth while stirring. Simmer the mixture for 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened.
  8. Add the cooked rice and stir well to coat the rice with the seasoned mixture. Simmer for another 5 minutes.
  9. Return the cooked shrimp to the skillet and gently mix until heated through.
  10. Serve hot and enjoy your shrimp dirty rice.

Notes

  • Use freshly cooked rice for the best texture and flavor absorption.
  • Do not overcook the shrimp to keep them tender and juicy.
  • Add extra cayenne pepper or hot sauce for a spicier Cajun flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
