Description

These Slice and Bake Heart Cookies are buttery, tender, and beautifully designed with a natural-colored heart center — perfect for Valentine’s Day or special occasions. Easy to prepare ahead, festive, and made with wholesome ingredients, they’re a fun and creative cookie that everyone will love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 12 teaspoons natural red food coloring
  • 1 tablespoon plant-based milk (optional, for dough consistency)

Instructions

  1. In a stand mixer, cream together the softened butter and powdered sugar for 2–3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  2. Add vanilla extract and mix until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms. Add a tablespoon of milk if needed to bring it together.
  4. Divide the dough into two parts. Mix red food coloring into one-third of the dough until evenly colored.
  5. Shape the red dough into a log, chill briefly if needed, then cut heart shapes using a small heart cutter. Stack the hearts to form a log.
  6. Flatten the remaining plain dough into strips and wrap around the heart log. Roll gently to form a smooth round log, keeping the heart centered.
  7. Wrap the dough log in plastic wrap and chill for at least 2 hours or until firm.
  8. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the log into 1/4-inch thick rounds and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  9. Bake for 10–12 minutes until edges are just beginning to turn golden. Let cool on a rack before serving.

Notes

  • Use a very sharp knife to keep heart shapes clean when slicing.
  • Chilling is essential to maintain the cookie shape during baking.
  • You can freeze the dough log for up to 2 months before slicing and baking.
  • Switch up the food coloring or shape for different holidays or celebrations.
