- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1–2 teaspoons natural red food coloring
- 1 tablespoon plant-based milk (optional, for dough consistency)
Instructions
- In a stand mixer, cream together the softened butter and powdered sugar for 2–3 minutes until light and fluffy.
- Add vanilla extract and mix until well combined.
- Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms. Add a tablespoon of milk if needed to bring it together.
- Divide the dough into two parts. Mix red food coloring into one-third of the dough until evenly colored.
- Shape the red dough into a log, chill briefly if needed, then cut heart shapes using a small heart cutter. Stack the hearts to form a log.
- Flatten the remaining plain dough into strips and wrap around the heart log. Roll gently to form a smooth round log, keeping the heart centered.
- Wrap the dough log in plastic wrap and chill for at least 2 hours or until firm.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the log into 1/4-inch thick rounds and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes until edges are just beginning to turn golden. Let cool on a rack before serving.
