Description

This White Cheddar Mac and Cheese is a rich, creamy comfort food made with tender pasta shells coated in a smooth, velvety white cheddar cheese sauce. Ready in just 25 minutes, it’s an easy and satisfying dish perfect for weeknight dinners or cozy meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3 cups shredded white cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups medium pasta shells (uncooked)
  • 4 tablespoons salted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook 2 cups of pasta shells according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In the same pot, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over low heat.
  3. Whisk in 1/4 cup flour, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Cook for 1–2 minutes until smooth and bubbly.
  4. Gradually pour in 2 cups milk while whisking continuously. Increase heat to medium and cook for 3–5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  5. Turn off the heat and stir in 3 cups shredded white cheddar cheese until fully melted and smooth.
  6. Add the cooked pasta shells back into the pot and mix until evenly coated with the cheese sauce.
  7. Serve warm and garnish with freshly cracked black pepper if desired.

Notes

  • Use freshly shredded white cheddar cheese for a smoother sauce.
  • Avoid high heat when melting cheese to prevent a grainy texture.
  • If the sauce is too thick, add a small amount of warm milk to adjust consistency.
  • You can substitute part of the milk with heavy cream for a richer flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
