Description

Witch Hat Halloween Cookies are festive peanut butter cookies decorated with colorful sanding sugar or Halloween sprinkles and topped with chocolate kisses or hugs. These easy Halloween treats are soft, chewy, and perfect for Halloween parties, family baking, and seasonal dessert tables. The dough can be prepared ahead of time, and the cookies are simple to customize with purple, green, or orange decorations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup creamy peanut butter
  • Purple or violet gel food coloring, as needed
  • Purple sanding sugar or Halloween sprinkles, as needed for coating
  • 30 chocolate kisses or chocolate hugs, unwrapped

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  2. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together for about 2 minutes until creamy, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  4. Add the creamy peanut butter and mix until smooth, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix on low speed just until combined.
  6. Add purple or violet gel food coloring gradually, mixing thoroughly until the desired color is reached.
  7. Cover the dough and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight. If chilled overnight, let the dough sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes if needed to make scooping easier.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  9. Place the purple sanding sugar or Halloween sprinkles in a small bowl. Scoop approximately 1 tablespoon of dough at a time and roll it into a ball between your palms.
  10. Roll each dough ball in the sanding sugar or sprinkles and arrange on the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between cookies.
  11. Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until the cookies puff up and develop small cracks. Do not allow them to brown. Remove from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes.
  12. Gently press one unwrapped chocolate kiss or hug into the center of each warm cookie.
  13. Place the baking sheet directly in the freezer for 10 minutes to help the chocolate retain its shape.
  14. Transfer the cookies to a wire cooling rack and allow them to cool completely before serving or storing.

Notes

  • Use creamy peanut butter for the best texture and flavor. The original recipe recommends regular creamy peanut butter or Skippy Naturals creamy peanut butter.
  • Gel food coloring provides a more concentrated color without adding excessive moisture to the dough.
  • Purple sanding sugar is easier to work with than many sprinkles. If using sprinkles, choose small varieties that adhere more easily to the dough.
  • Chilling the dough for at least 2 hours helps make it easier to handle and control spreading.
  • Unwrap the chocolate kisses or hugs before the cookies finish baking so they can be added quickly while the cookies are warm.
  • Freeze the decorated cookies for 10 minutes after adding the chocolate to help the candy retain its shape.
  • Store cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.
  • The dough can be refrigerated for up to 48 hours before baking. Let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before proceeding if it is too firm.
  • Baked cookies can be frozen in an airtight, freezer-safe container with parchment paper between layers for up to 2 months.
  • Unbaked dough balls can be frozen without the sugar coating for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before coating and baking, or bake from frozen with an additional 1–2 minutes as needed.
  • The recipe can be halved or doubled to suit your needs.
  • For a peanut-free alternative, try a suitable seed butter, recognizing that the texture may vary. Check ingredient labels for allergen and cross-contact information.
